Offshore Outsourcing: What Role Will the Recession Play?

The ongoing credit crisis is a concern for everyone in nearly every industry—fear of lost jobs, foreclosed homes and bankrupt businesses. But those lost jobs are likely to further bolster the booming offshore outsourcing market—so the experts predicted. (Also read How to Save Your Job During a Recession and 10 Secrets for Searching for a Job During a Recession.)

Fast-forward two months: it's time for them to eat their words. Neither are customers outsourcing more nor is the industry growing any faster. In fact each day service providers only revise their growth estimates in the downward direction.

Some brave analysts are finally coming out with the truth. Days after Wall Street's collapse, vice-president and principal analyst with US research firm Forrester, John McCarthy, said the scale of the crisis had rendered all previous studies including Forrester's own survey, released earlier this month, redundant, and that Indian IT providers should prepare for slower growth and lower profits. "It is naive to say an economic slowdown is good because cost-cutting will lead to higher offshoring. This is no longer a recession, it is fundamental restructuring of financial services that is taking place," says McCarthy.

What the hell happened in these two months?

Multiple factors are at play here—some recent developments and some historic issues that have been building over time.

About 20 percent to 40 percent of the revenues of offshore outsourcing firms are tied to the financial services industry. With its collapse, companies have been forced to look to other vertical markets. In normal circumstances, that should have been enough to offset the revenue erosion. But the problem is, that everyone is in the same boat and those other industries are also impacted by the crisis, fading consumer demand and reduction in spend.

For example, the travel vertical has started seeing a rise in ticket cancellations and refunds, which has led service providers like WNS to greater conservatism on revised guidance. Hexaware stated that delayed decision-making is spreading out from BFSI to travel, and it has now reduced its annual growth estimate from 24 percent to 7 or 9 percent. Sasken is now cautious about telecom handset segment as all the top-five handset customers are seeing a slowdown in sales (a u-turn from Sasken's bullish stand on this segment a couple of months ago).

So, suddenly all players are chasing a smaller market, in which there was little differentiation amongst players anyway, and it will lead to pricing pressure, reduced profitability and less growth.

It will also become difficult to generate new business (unless driven by price), which will result in generic and inefficient players rightfully getting wiped out of the market. Rather than getting upset about it, I think it's an exciting opportunity for service providers to innovate and build their differentiators. Customers, I would say, have never had it so good—they can finally be in the driver's seat.

It's also difficult to accurately quantify the business value of offshore outsourcing. At a theoretical level, it does make sense. At a headcount level, it also makes sense. But at a business outcome level, the real and hidden costs are often ignored and many companies are left thinking "hey wait a minute, I offshored hundreds of my staff...why isn't my profitability increasing?" And despite share of offshoring rising, why haven't we ever seen a reduction in IT spend? That's because offshore outsourcing has so far focused on headcount as the currency, not the business value generated. That is about to, thankfully, come to an end.

The more I think about the full value chain, the more intrigued, and sometimes scared, I get about the full impact. TCS has reduced its annual hiring estimate by about 30 percent, Wipro already reduced headcount in IT services last quarter, Polaris has resorted to just-in-time hiring, Infosys is visiting fewer campuses...what does it mean for the employment market in offshore outsourcing countries? Will wage inflations ease off? Will attritions finally come to manageable levels? Will being skilled come back in fashion compared to just having an IT diploma/degree? We'll have to wait and see...

It is the end of the golden age of offshore outsourcing, but it also heralds a new dawn—the age of truth and rationality. Where offshore outsourcing delivers real, tangible business value, and service providers are focused on making things work for customers in unique and innovative ways.

Web 2.0 helps firms innovate, allows closer monitoring of marketing spend

To fulfil the aspirations of a young workforce, continuously asking for seamless, real-time interaction, companies are allowing the use of Web 2.0 applications such as Skype, LinkedIn, Facebook, Joomla!, Second Life and S for business purposes to generate sales leads, recruit talent and test and improve products.

Subash A K Rao, director, human resources, Cisco India — a leader in networking for the internet — says the company uses a broad suite of social networking tools like blogs and wikis. It also uses richer applications like TelePresence to connect and collaborate.

Infogain, a technology solutions company, uses its internal as well as external blog sites to connect communities of dispersed knowledge workers for collaborative benefit. Eddie Chandhok, president, global delivery organisation, Infogain, says: "We expect to leverage the power of collaboration by getting innovative ideas from individuals, who are free to send theirtechnology/business ideas to the our CTO office directly."

Soon, the company is planning to use these communities (through Infogain Blog, Infogain Wiki) to get feedback on new services feedback. This will help in raising the efficacy of its marketing.

APC-MGE, a leading global provider of critical power and cooling solutions, (a part of Schnieder Electric) uses mashups besides wikis, instant messaging services and others.

Subodh Tagare, marketing director, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh region, APC-MGE, says: "Our employees use mashup to manage leads emanating from diverse sources. It helps in consolidation and tracking of leads and to ensure closures."

Salesforce.com is another hit among sales and marketing employees across the world for automation of sales and marketing tasks. Anand Dhand, director, Salesforce.com, India, says: "Though Salesforce applications are used across all the verticals, Business-2-Business, Business-2-Customer, Salesforce Automation (SFA), partner — and customer- relationship management are the most widely-used services."

Vineet Tyagi, associate director, engineering, Impetus Technologies, says his company's sales team in the US extensively uses Salesforce.com for research, lead generation and prospect management. "Our recruitment team uses a variety of social networking websites to narrow down on talent and communicate about the work options the company offers.

Not only this, Impetus marketing and communication team makes wonderful use of social content sites such as YouTube and Wikipedia for branding," he says.

Sunil Mangalore, CEO, Datacraft India Ltd, a leading IT services and solutions provider and a strategic partner of Microsoft, concurs: "We use blogs, wikis, discussion forums, shared calendars, shared project-tracking tools to collaborate on leads, projects, problem resolution."

Sundararaj S, Partner, Anantara Solutions, a provider of business and IT consulting services, says: "We use sugarCRM for customer relationship management, basecamphq for managing and tracking projects, LinkedIn for business connections and as a recruitment aid and Skype for messaging and for tele-conversations." Anantara has an office in Second Life and uses this extensively to socialise and connect.

here are inherent risks like data privacy, application security, information integrity and information silos in using Web 2.0 applications, note experts. There is a chance that inaccurate, or occasionally even offensive, information may get out. But social networks can help monitor and control this situation. "Over time, we think the social norms around these collaboration tools will develop and become second nature.

For example, there was a lot of concern around abuse and misuse when email was first deployed in enterprises. Now, people know what is acceptable to email and what is not," Rao from Cisco says.

Indian IT company plans big in Michigan

US based outsourcing firm Integreon, which has a presence in India, is on the lookout for acquisitions here. Investment banking sources said the company is in talks with domestic knowledge process outsourcing KPO and business process outsourcing BPO firms and at least two small buyouts for a total of USD50 million are likely to be sealed during the current calendar year.

Further, the company plans to double its India headcount from the current 1,500 in the next three years.

On the cards is another outsourcing centre in Mumbais Goregaon area with a capacity of 1,000 seats.

It currently has three centres in the country two in Mumbai and one in Gurgaon.

Liam Brown, president and CEO of Integreon in the US, said, We want to grow our business in India due to the tremendous growth potential. We are actively in talks with a few firms for inorganic growth, too, and will be able to provide details once things are finalised.

Integreons keenness to grow in India is understandable given that the country accounts for almost 60 percent of its sales.

Analysts said Integreon has to grow inorganically to consolidate its expertise in the areas of KPO and legal process outsourcing LPO, and tap the sectors and customers to a greater extent. India is a preferred destination for LPO because of the huge difference in the wage rates here and those prevalent in the US and the UK.

Earlier, in July 2005, Integreon had acquired Brahmy Solutions, a UKbased, highend analytics company. It also acquired a part of the LPO business of New Yorkbased BPO major Bowne, which provides financial publishing that year. In April 2003, Integreon acquired Contentscape, a company specialising in web content design and development.

Outsourcing -- Not Just a Way to Cut Costs Anymore

Companies are increasingly considering outsourcing for quality and expertise. Here's a look at other outsourcing trends and tips for dealing with the changing environment.

When American companies began turning to India, Uganda, China, Poland and elsewhere to staff call centers, handle paperwork, write software and manufacture products, there was one goal – to save money. But outsourcing firms have grown so good at the diverse services they offer that American companies are turning to them even if little money is being saved -- and sometimes even if they cost a little extra.

"Customer organizations realized that the service providers really were experts in their chosen fields and that outsourcing offered a range of additional benefits such as access to new skill sets, best-of-breed services, greater innovation and transformation, and better speed-to-market for new products and services," the law firm of Morrison & Foerster writes in a report on outsourcing trends for 2008.

The firm warns American companies that the falling dollar could make outsourcing even more costly, but to not act precipitously. Providers that rely heavily on U.S. clients and those with contracts that put much of the currency risk on them may push for price increases, even if they hold long-term contracts. Clients should think twice before turning them down. "Some of the more mature customers may realize that it is in their best interests to ensure that their provider is not in a loss-making situation," the report says. "…However, such price increases will come at a cost, and providers will be pushed even harder to innovate and provide more added value."

Morrison & Foerster says contract disputes and misunderstandings are still common, despite the fact that agreements are much more carefully worked out than they were in the early years of the outsourcing explosion. The report says customers themselves are often to blame. "It is clear that many of the contract management mechanisms in place … either are not being used or are being implemented poorly." It urges companies to recognize that outsourcing firms need the same type of supervision and oversight as their own operations. More time and staff should be dedicated to making sure quality, service and contractual terms are being met. Or, of course, that function can be outsourced.

Local IT services set to break $4bn as outsourcing grows

Johannesburg - The local information technology (IT) services market is expected to exceed $4 billion (R31 billion) this year, representing a year-on-year increase of more than 11 percent, according to the latest report by research firm IDC.

The growth is fuelled by economic expansion, the adoption of open-source software, government projects such as the e-government that is meant to provide technology access to rural areas, technology upgrade cycles, preparations for the 2010 soccer World Cup, deregulation, and growth in the small and medium business market.

Many firms are outsourcing non-core operations such as IT to companies such as Business Connexion, GijimaAst and IBM to save money and focus on the core business.

Software Outsourcing market transforming

New research has revealed that the outsourcing service market is experiencing significant change.

A report by IDC on behalf of I.NET, part of BT Italia, found that IT sectors are becoming "increasingly interdependent" as organisations look to meet the requirements of the market.

The study claimed that data and system security continues to be one of the key challenges facing enterprises, prompting many to seek solutions that provide "greater visibility, transparency and integration".

"They also need partners that understand what drives and what hinders ICT projects to truly respond and adapt to companies' business and IT needs," it noted.

According to the research, the "convergence" of security, storage and system management is likely to create a number of new opportunities within the ICT industry.

In related news, Gartner recently reported that 41 per cent of businesses are outsourcing IT in order to improve performance.
